National Aquarium in Baltimore annnounces new board members
Baltimore, MD (May 12, 2008) – The Governance and Nominating Committee, in accordance with the Bylaws of the National Aquarium Institute, is proud to recommend the following 2008 slate for your consideration.
David R. Bowen (Dave) is currently Executive Vice President of PNC Business Banking for Greater Baltimore. Prior to conversion of PNC Bank and Mercantile, he was Executive Vice President of Mercantile’s Banking Division. In 1984 he joined Mercantile as a Vice President in Corporate Lending.
Mr. Bowen holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business from the University of Maryland College Park. He currently serves on the boards of the Downtown Partnership of Baltimore, Inc., WYPR, and Spring Capital Partners.
Orlan M. Johnson is a Partner in the Firm’s Business Department. His practice focuses on general corporate matters, complex business transactions and federal and state regulatory issues in business and securities transactions, including proxy solicitations, bankruptcy reorganizations and equity and debt offerings. He has extensive experience in mergers and acquisitions involving utility companies, and audits of public utility companies in conjunction with state and local public utility commissions and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. He counsels clients on transportation and infrastructure projects, and advises hedge funds on arbitrage matters and legislative issues related to potential mergers and acquisitions in regulated and non-regulated businesses.
Prior to joining Saul Ewing, Mr. Johnson was Of Counsel at Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy, LLP where he served as co-head of its regulatory practice in the Washington, DC office. Previously, he served for nine years as a Staff Attorney and Branch Chief in the Division of Investment Management for the United States Securities and Exchange Commission. In this capacity, his primary responsibilities included advising the Commission on the regulation of exempt utility companies and utility companies registered under the Public Utility Holding Company Act of 1935. Other responsibilities included compliance inspections of investment advisers and investment companies pursuant to the Investment Advisers Act of 1940 and the Investment Company Act of 1940.
In addition to his legal practice, Mr. Johnson is an adjunct professor of law at Howard University School of Law where he teaches Securities Regulation classes in connection with the fundamentals of federal and state securities laws, including the 1933, 1934 Acts and the Investment Company Act of 1940. He is conversational in French.

Robert E. Carter
Bob Carter is Vice Chairman of Archimede Philanthropy Partners. He divides his time between their New York headquarters and his home in Florida. Carter served as President of Ketchum, Inc. for over 25 years – Ketchum has been a longtime fundraising consultant for the National Aquarium Institute. Bob has served on other Boards including The Boys’ Latin School (Trustee Emeritus), Malcolm Parcel Foundation, ePhilanthropy Foundation, AFP Maryland Chapter, Lacrosse USA Foundation, and Gateway Rehabilitation Center. Bob’s wife, Carol, serves on the board of McDaniel College with current NAIB Board member, Wayne Curry.

He received his undergraduate degree from Andrews University.
Damian C. O’Doherty
Damian Colin O’Doherty is an Associate in the Baltimore development-based firm Gildea & Schmidt LLC, where he chairs their government affairs practice. O’Doherty is the former senior adviser for Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith, and he began his career working for the Baltimore City delegation. Damian’s brother, Ryan O’Doherty, is a former Maryland State Democratic official. O’Doherty has a B.A. in History from the University of Delaware.

Anna Smith
Anna Smith is a Group Vice President with the M&T Investment Group. She is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the delivery of Private Client Services for the Maryland and Greater Washington regions. Ms. Smith has 30 years in the wealth management and investment business with over 26 years at M&T Bank, formerly Allfirst Bank. Anna is a graduate of Hollins University and the National Trust School at Northwestern University. She is Co-Chair of the Board of Directors of the Maryland Mentoring Partnership; Trustee of Villa Julie College; member of the Investment Committee of the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland; member of the Investment Committee of the Maryland Historical Society; Senior Warden of St. Thomas’ Church; and past President of the Alumnae Association of St. Catherine’s School. Anna was selected as one of Maryland’s Top 100 Women by The Daily Record in 2004; highlighted in Chesapeake Home magazine in the 2003 Annual Guide to Industry Experts; and recognized by Baltimore Magazine as one of Baltimore’s top money managers in 1997, 1999, and 2002.

Ann T. Gallant
Ann Gallant currently volunteers and has worked on numerous political campaigns; she also does marketing consulting. Ann was formerly the Vice President of Corporate Communications for CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield. She was recommended as a board prospect by Jim Dale. Philanthropic activities include serving on the Board of Directors for Baltimore Reads, Inc. Ann is a member of the Daily Record’s Maryland’s Top 100 Women “Circle of Excellence.” She and husband Philip have two grown children.
Erik Rifkin
Erik Rifkin is President of Rifkin and Associates, an environmental consulting firm that specializes in the characterization of ecological and human health risks from exposure to soil, water, air and sediments. He also holds academic appointment at the University of California, Davis (Bodega Marine Laboratory). Mr. Rifkin is a contributor to major reports for the Environmental Protection Agency and the President’s Council on Environmental Quality, is a consultant for Honeywell, Inc., and a Board member of Arc Environmental. Erik and his wife, Elaine, are avid scuba divers.

Sean Duffy is an Investment Advisor for First Georgetown Securities, Inc. in Alexandria, VA. He is a former board member of the City Museum of Washington.

Bob Neuman is Senior Principal of JMZell Partners, Ltd., a commercial real estate consulting firm in Washington, D.C. Mr. Neuman received his B.S. in Finance with a concentration in Real Estate & Urban Development from American University. He is a licensed real estate broker in Washington, D.C., Maryland & Virginia.
